Early Years

The company was founded by Bob Alkema and Steve Marshall in Merced, California. Since coastal city residents enjoyed spending most of their time out on the water, they saw an open market for creating strong boats that would enhance water sports activities. One of these cities is Malibu, which inspired the company’s name. In their initial start, in 1982, the company only produced two boats per week, but with constant perseverance and dedication, production went on increasing as demands grew higher. By 1988, the company had a 9% share in the industry.

Relocated

In 1992, to improve distribution, the company opened a production facility in Loudon, Tennessee, which remains their headquarters to this day. The company has made big waves in the boating industry and has become one of the top boat manufacturers in the world. As watersports pastimes such as wakeboarding and wakesurfing increase in popularity, the company is certain to maintain its dominance in the market.
